203 James Crozier

Biography

Outside left James Paterson Lyle Crozier was born in the Milton district of North Glasgow, his father worked in a local iron foundry. He joined the Tigers in June 1927 from Glasgow Ashfield, a junior side based a short distance from Milton that was a rich seam of talent mined by Hull City during the managerial reign of Bill McCracken. Crozier replaced City’s regular outside left Billy Taylor for two games in October 1927 then made a third appearance at the end of April 1928. He left the Tigers in the 1928 close season.

Crozier joined Glasgow Celtic in August 1928 for a nominal transfer fee and made two starts for the Parkhead side in December 1928 against Dundee and New Years Day 1929 against Glasgow Rangers. After spending loan spells at Forfar Athletic and Ayr United, Crozier joined Irish side Derry City in June 1929. After a season in Ireland that he ended at Balfast side Linfield, James rejoined Glasgow Ashfield in August 1930. In October 1931 he joined Scottish League side Brechin City and served the Angus side for two seasons. A year later he had a short spell at Greenock Morton, at which point his playing career appears to have come to an end.

By 1937 he was working for book publisher William Collins in Glasgow, but after he was accused of pinching books he opened a newspaper and sweet shop in central Glasgow’s Maitland Street. Crozier died in Glasgow in 1973.
