199 John Morris

Biography

John Morris was born in an old mill at Murdostoun Castle near Shotts in central Scotland. He lived and worked in nearby Newarthill and played many seasons for Newarthill Thistle, who won the Lanarkshire Junior League in 1917 when Morris was still a teenager – he was selected for a Lanarkshire in January 1918 while still just 18 years old. Between July 1921 and February 1923 he played for Burnbank Athletic, then between February 1923 and May 1924 he served Kirkintilloch Rob Roy before returning to Newarthill.

A strapping six foot tall centre half, Morris joined the Tigers in June 1926 but made only one appearance for the first team in a 2-3 reverse at home to Grimsby Town in March 1927.

He left City in May 1927 and joined Division Three North side Bradford City, where he did not register any further senior appearances. He returned to Newarthill after his year at Bradford City and worked at the local colliery. In July 1939 he was taken ill on the way to work, collapsed and died of heart failure just weeks after his 40th birthday.
