Biography
Left half Joseph “Joe” Campbell was born in Walker, a dockside industrial suburb of eastern Newcastle Upon Tyne. He joined Hull City in May 1925 from Northern Alliance League side Walker Park FC and for two seasons he served the City Reserves while providing first team cover for the consistent Tommy Bleakley.
Campbell moved on to Division Three North side Bradford City in May 1927, his debut for the Bantams in September 1927 against Halifax Town turned out to be his only appearance for the club.
Campbell moved south to join Southern League side Yeovil and Petters United in the 1928 close season and featured regularly in the Glovers’ first team during the 1928/29 season. In May 1929 he was restored to the senior football scene when he signed for Division Three South side Southend United. He made seven senior starts in the opening two months of the season before drifting out of the side. He joined Southern League side Dartford in the summer of 1930.
After his football career Campbell returned in the Hull area where he died in September 1981.
