171 John Goulden

Biography

Outside right John Thomas Goulden, often known as “Jack”, was born in Sunderland but raised in the Newland Avenue area of West Hull. He worked at Needler’s as a young man and played for the factory team, showing form that made Hull City sweet on him. He signed for the Tigers in September 1924 and served the reserves regularly for two seasons. He made two starts for the first team in October 1924, the second of which saw the Tigers clobber Barnsley 5-2. However other right sided players were preferred to Goulden and he left City in the 1926 close season without making another first team appearance.

In 1926/27 Goulden had no senior club, although he had a short trial with Stockport County reserves. In August 1927 he headed north of the border and signed for Raith Rovers, playing several senior matches for the Kirkcaldy side. In October 1928 he journeyed to the other end of the British Isles, signing for Yeovil and Petters United (now Yeovil Town). In 1929 his luck ran out and he returned to Hull. Goulden died in the Spring of 1981.
