Biography
Liverpudlian centre forward Griffith Lloyd Owen began his career in August 1921 amongst the ranks at Liverpool FC, but in three seasons he was unable to break out of the reserve side. He therefore came to Hull City in May 1924 as an unknown property but impressed in an end-of-season tour of Sweden, scoring goals in friendlies against IF Kamraterna (a select XI drawn from Gothenburg clubs) and Gothenburg Alliance while deputising for injured striker Paddy Mills. Owen did enough in pre-season to be thrust straight into the Tigers’ first team for the first two league games of the season. He evidently failed to impress because he was consigned to City’s reserves and tried at right half after these two appearances, leaving the club in the 1925 close season.
Owen joined Chester FC in June 1925, then in the Cheshire County League. By October 1925 he was scoring freely and attracting interest from league clubs once more. He saw out the season at Sealand Road and joined Third Division North side Rochdale in June 1926, but in half a season at the ‘Dale he again failed to impress and made only three starts, joining Flint Town United in February 1927. He returned to Liverpool after his playing career petered out and died in the early months of 1949.
