Biography

Irish outside left Dermot Patrick Doyle joined the Tigers in April 1922 having had a successful season playing in the Southern League Welsh Division with Pontypridd. Doyle was handed his first team debut on the last day of the 1921/22 season and began the 1922/23 season with three starts on the left wing. However in late September 1922 City signed Scotsman Alec Thom from Airdrieonians, Thom was handed the outside left shirt and Doyle dropped to the reserves. Dermot managed only two further first team starts in February and April 1923, both at left half. he left the Tigers in the 1923 close season.

Born in Dublin, Dermot Patrick Doyle joined Dublin-based Irish League side Shelbourne for the 1920/21 season, having spent three seasons playing for another Dublin side Olympia FC. The growing unrest in Ireland, which eventually led to civil war and independence, encouraged Doyle and three other Shelbourne team-mates to join Welsh side Pontypridd in July 1921. A good season with Pontypridd attracted the attention of Football League clubs – Doyle was watched by Hull City manager Percy Lewis in an April 1922 Welsh Cup semi final against Cardiff City and was signed a few days later.

Doyle returned to Ireland in the 1923 close season and played for Shelbourne for at least two further seasons. Further details of his life have not been found.
