137 Jack Stansfield

Biography

Outside left John “Jack” Stansfield was born in Bradford and raised in the south Bradford suburb of Wibsey. A bristle dresser in the brush manufacturing industry during his teenage years, Stansfield joining Bradford Park Avenue in 1914 and while he made no senior appearances in the 1914/15 season, he did make numerous non-senior appearances for Avenue during the wartime regional leagues once World War One put a stop to the Football League in 1915.

He joined Castleford Town in 1918 then moved to Division One side Bradford City in 1919 and made his League debut on Boxing Day 1919 against Sheffield Wednesday. After one further appearance for the Bantams, Stansfield returned to Castleford Town in the 1920 close season and scored regularly for Midland League side for a season and a half.

After a short trial period in Hull City reserves in January 1922, the Tigers paid £450 for his signature and gave him his debut three weeks after the transfer. He started 12 matches during the latter part of the season as City inhabited the top six positions and scored his only City goal in a March 1922 1-0 win at Leicester City. He left the Tigers in May 1922 and rejoined Castleford Town for a third time, however he appears to have given up the game at the end of the 1922/23 season.

Stansfield returned to live in Wibsey and by 1939 was working again in the brush making industry. He died in Bradford in 1980. Between 2001 and 2004 Jack’s great-grandson James Stansfield played for Bradford Park Avenue, having started his career in the mid-1990s at Huddersfield Town.
