Biography

Half back William Thomas Smith joined the Tigers in May 1920 from Langley Park FC, a successful junior side that had just been promoted to the Northern League. His stay at Hull City lasted only one season and entailed just one senior appearance, in March 1921.
Smith was from Langley Park, a large coal mining village west of Durham City, and came to prominence playing Army football during World War One. On returning from his wartime duties he played for his local junior side and in 1920 Langley Park reached the quarter final of the FA Amateur Cup as well as heading the Durham Central League and lifting the Durham Amateur Cup, the Durham Hospital Cup and the Durham Aged Miners’ Cup. No wonder league sides like Hull City and Sunderland (who signed Smith’s teammate George Ardley) came snifffing.
Smith returned north in the 1921 close season and made 33 appearances and scored three goals for Durham City, newly promoted to the Football League. In 1922 he transferred to York City, then a Midland League side, and spent three seasons with the Minstermen, starting 75 league games. In 1925 he briefly joined Stockport County, not adding to his Football League appearances tally.
