126 Sam Cheetham

Biography

Right back Samuel Cheetham joined the Tigers in May 1920 from local football in the St Helens area. He was born and raised in Thatto Heath, a village a couple of miles west of St Helens where he worked in a glass factory in his younger days after being raised by his cart driver father. Cheetham waited until Christmas Day 1920 to make his first team debut for Hull City and started the next 26 consecutive senior matches, dropping out of the team on the last day of the season. He scored his only goal for the Tigers in February 1921, a 2-2 draw against Stockport County. After starting the first six games of the 1921/22 season Cheetham yielded to Tom Brandon at right back and spent two months in the Tigers’ reserves before joining First Division side Bradford City in November 1921.

Cheetham spent six seasons at Valley Parade, playing a first team support role for the great majority of that time. His first partial season ended in relegation to the Second Division and afew months later in October 1922 he scored his first goal for Bradford, a penalty in a 2-2 draw against Leicester City. In January 1923 Cheetham played two games at centre forward against former club Hull City, a change in position that went on to define his later career. After playing a handful (or two) of games per season for the Bantams, Cheetham had another run of games at centre forward in January 1926 and scored five goals in three games against Chelsea, Swansea Town and Darlington. His final game for Bradford, and final goal too, came in a January 1927 FA Cup tie against First Division side Derby County that the Rams won 6-2. At the end of the 1926/27 season Cheetham had made 64 starts for Bradford City and scored 12 goals.

Cheetham spent the 1927/28 season at North Wales side Colwyn Bay United then spent the next season at Cheshire County League side Macclesfield. He joined Southern League side Yeovil & Petters United in the 1929 close season and after two years he hung up his boots and started working for the local electricity supply company. He lived in Yeovil for the rest of his life, dying in September 1967.
