123 Harry Sergeaunt

Biography

Henry “Harry” Sergeaunt was born in Richmond, North Yorkshire to a Canadian-born soldier and musician father who served the British Army 19th Regiment of Foot in the Boer War. By 1911 the Sergeaunt family had moved to Newcastle Upon Tyne in army housing close to the Leazes Park Barracks, with Harry working as a mechanic. He came into football after World War One, playing for Gateshead-based local side Felling Colliery before signing for Hull City in October 1920. He was given two starts at inside left in the Autumn months before getting a longer run in the City first team that commenced on Christmas Day 1920. Two days later City entertained Clapton Orient and Sergeaunt struck all three goals in a 3-0 victory. Harry celebrated New Years Day with two more goals against Wolves in a 3-1 victory at Molineux, then a week later scored again in a 3-0 win over Bath City in the FA Cup. Three more goals followed over the next two months but in mid-March 1921 Harry suffered a broken leg that kept him out of the game for five months. Returning to the first team at the start of the 1921/22 season, Sergeaunt played in six matches but failed to score and was replaced by Charlie Flood. He made just one more appearance in April 1922 at Barnsley before leaving the club in the close season.

Sergeaunt moved south and joined Brighton & Hove Albion in July 1922 but he failed to settle and two months later he returned north to join Blyth Spartans. By December 1922 he had joined North Eastern League side Seaton Delaval where he played for over three years. In August 1926 he got a second chance at League football when he joined Division Three North side Durham City for the 1926/27 season. Harry scored nine goals in 28 appearances for Durham before ending his career during 1927/28 season at Preston Colliery.

By 1939 he lived in Gateshead and worked as a milling machine operator. He died in Gateshead in 1960.
