1167 Carl Rushworth

Biography

Highly rated Brighton & Hove Albion goalkeeper Carl Rushworth joined Hull City on the August 2024 transfer deadline day, beginning his fourth successive season-long loan.  After waiting patiently on the bench for his chance he suffered an ankle injury in training that sidelined him for three months, meaning he didn’t make his Tigers debut until January 2025 when he made an impressive save in a penalty shootout that eventually saw the Tigers dumped out of the FA Cup. After three starts in nine days Rushworth was recalled by Brighton in January 2025.

Carl Andrew Rushworth was born in Halifax, West Yorkshire, and came through the academy system as a youngster at Huddersfield Town.  He was released by the Terriers at the age of 16 and joined his home town club FC Halifax Town.  He developed quickly at The Shay and in December 2018 he was signed by Premier League side Brighton & Hove Albion.

In July 2019 he joined Isthmian League side Worthing on a season-long loan, making 30 senior appearances before the COVID-19 outbreak led to the season being abandoned.  Carl stayed with Brighton for the 2020/21 season and made his senior debut in a September 2020 EFL Trophy tie against Leyton Orient, making two further starts in that competition later that same month.  By the end of the season he was a regular starter between the posts in the Seagulls’ Premier League 2 Under-23 side and was ready for the next career challenge.

In July 2021 he joined League Two side Walsall on a season-long loan and started all but three league games during the 2021/22 campaign and made 46 appearances in all competitions.  His development continued when he spent the 2022/23 season on loan at League One side Lincoln City, again starting most games (he missed only four league fixtures) and amassing 46 appearances in total.  He then spent the 2023/24 season on loan at Championship side Swansea City, remaining ever-present in the League and making 48 appearances in total.  Rushworth sat on the Brighton bench for two August 2024 Premier League matches and was an experienced operator when he joined Hull City on loan in August 2024.

In November 2019 Carl was called up to the England Under-19 squad but was benched and did not play in three matches.  In October 2020 Rushworth was elevated to the England Under-20 squad to play Wales but was again an unused substitute.  In March and June 2022 he was selected for the Under-21 squad but sat on the bench unused for four European Championship qualifiers.  He was on the bench for three more Under-21 matches during the 2022/23 season before finally making his Under-21 debut against Japan in June 2023.  He then returned to the bench for all six matches in the 2023 European Under-21 Championship finals hosted by Georgia, a tournament that England won after defeating Spain in the final.
