1155 Anthony Racioppi

Biography

Swiss international goalkeeper Anthony Racioppi joined Tim Walter’s new-look Hull City side in August 2024 to provide stern first team competition for Croatian youngster Ivor Pandur. Ten minutes into Racioppi’s debut against Sheffield Wednesday a poor touch led to a simple tap-in for a grateful Owl, and while he soon settled to give an accomplished first performance this howler moved Anthony down the Tigers’ pecking order of senior goalkeepers. He sat on the bench several times as Pandur retained his first team place, by January 2025 it was decided that Racioppi was surplus to requirements and he joined German Bundesliga.2 title challengers 1FC Koln on a half season loan.

Anthony Racioppi was born in the Swiss city of Geneva and played junior football in his hometown before joining the academy system at French Ligue 1 giants Olympique Lyonnais, aka Lyon, when he was 13 years old.  He signed his first senior contract at Lyon in July 2018 having progressed through the Under-19 team and the B team over the previous two seasons, making his B team debut in January 2017 against FC Villefranche.  He was selected as substitute goalkeeper on Lyon’s senior team bench for the first time in May 2018, a role he fulfilled on twenty occasions over the next two years without ever making his senior debut in OL’s colours – the most notable occasion being the July 2020 Coupe de France final against Paris Saint Germaine, which Lyon lost after a penalty shoot-out.

In September 2020 Anthony transferred to Lyon’s Ligue 1 rivals Dijon FCO, who had been struggling in the lower half of the table for the previous two seasons.  He made his debut for Les Rouges in November 2020 against Metz and stayed in the first team for five months before Benin gloveman Saturnin Allagbe was restored to the first eleven, only for his side to be relegated to Ligue 2 at the end of the 2020/21 season.  Anthony was used less frequently in the 2021/22 season and in January 2022 he was on the move again having made 26 senior appearances for the club.

In January 2022 Racioppi returned to his home country and signed for Swiss giants Young Boys Berne.  His debut for Young Boys came in January 2022 against FC Lugano and he remained on the first team bench when experienced Swiss David von Ballmoos was restored to the first team in March 2022.  Racioppi and von Ballmoos shared first team duties over the next two seasons with Anthony making a strong impression when starting both legs of a Champions League tie against Manchester City in October and November 2023.  He won two Swiss League champions medals for the 2022/23 and 2023/24 seasons and helped the club reach the 2022/23 Swiss Cup Final against FC Lugano, starting four of the five rounds preceding rounds only to miss the final due to a knee injury.  When he left Young Boys in August 2024 he had made 55 senior appearances for the club.

Racioppi was part of the Switzerland international setup as a youngster, making his debut for the Under-20 side against England in September 2017 and making 8 appearances for the Under-20s over the next eighteen months.  In November 2018 he made his Under-21 debut against France, the first of 12 starts at that level that culminated in March 2021 with three appearances in the UEFA Under-21 Championship finals played in Slovenia.  In September 2023 Anthony was selected for the Swiss senior squad for the first time and sat on the bench as an unused substitute three times during the 2023/24 season.
