Biography

German attacking midfielder Marvin Mehlem joined Tim Walter’s new-look Tigers squad in August 2024 and was introduced straight into the first team at the start of the 2024/25 season. He scored his opening City goal in the League Cup against Sheffield Wednesday in August 2024 but as Summer turned to Autumn the combination of an injury lay-off and the dismissal of Walter meant Mehlem struggled for game time. In early January 2025 he returned to Germany, joining Bundesliga.2 side SC Paderborn on a half-season loan.
Marvin Mehlem was born in Karlsruhe, an industrial city in the Rhine valley near the border of Germany and France. He came through the junior ranks at his local Bundesliga side Karlsruher SC, where he first encountered Tim Walter who was an important part of the youth team coaching staff. Mehlem made rapid progress through the youth team ranks at Karlsruhe and quickly won international recognition, though his progress was hampered by a fractured ankle sustained in February 2015. In July 2015 he made his first team debut for Karlsruhe in a Bundesliga.2 fixture against Greuther Furth and added two further appearances during the rest of the 2015/16 season, then made 8 more first team appearances during the 2016/17 season to take his tally to 11 appearances. Karlsruhe were relegated to the Bundesliga.3 at the end of the 2016/17 season.
In July 2017 Mehlem left his boyhood club and joined Bundesliga.2 side SV Darmstadt 98. Marvin made his debut for The Lilies at the end of July 2017 against Greuther Furth, the same club he made his senior debut against two year earlier. He quickly established himself as a regular starter for Darmstadt, netting his first senior goal in August 2017 against MSV Duisburg and playing an important role as his side elevated itself from mid-table triers to promotion contenders, finishing 5th, 7th and 4th in three consecutive seasons. During the third of those seasons, 2021/22 season, Mehlem missed three months of football with a knee injury. When he returned to full fitness for the 2022/23 season Darmstadt had their finest season for many years and finished second in the table, winning promotion to the Bundesliga.1. Marvin’s game time in the top flight during the 2023/24 season was hampered by problems with a leg fracture and when Darmstadt were relegated back to Bundesliga.2 he was open to new opportunities offered in England by Hull City. In his seven seasons ant SV Darmstadt 98 Mehlem scored 21 goals in 191 senior appearances.
As a youngster at Karlsruhe Mehlem attracted significant interest from the German international setup. He made his debut for the Germany U16 side in May 2013 against Ireland and made 4 appearances at that level, scoring a hattrick against Romania later in May 2013. Between August and November 2013 he made 5 appearances for the Under 17 side, scoring once against Israel, then in December 2014 he played two Under 18 matches against USA. In September 2015 he made his debut for the Under 19 side against Netherlands and scored one goal in 8 appearances during the 2015/16 season, playing three times for his country in the European Under 19 Championship Finals held in Germany during July 2016.
