Biography
Left sided attacking midfielder Anass Zaroury joined the Tigers on a half season loan in January 2024, making his debut days later in Liam Rosenior’s play-off chasing first eleven. He scored his first City goal in a fine late-February 2024 win at Southampton and added a second two weeks later against champions-elect Leicester City. His season ended early in April 2024 when he sustained an injury.
Anass Zaroury was born and raised in the Belgian town of Mechelen by parents of Moroccan descent. After spending his teenage years at the JMG Academy in Belgium Anass joined Belgian top flight side Zulte Waregem in 2017 and progressed through the youth ranks but did not make the first team. In June 2019 Zaroury joined Belgian Challenger Pro League side Lommel and quickly made his senior debut in August 2019 against KVC Westerlo. He made only six appearances in his debut season for Lommel but in the 2020/21 season he became a first team regular after scoring four goals in the opening ten games. By the end of the season his tally for Lommel had risen to 8 goals in 33 appearances.
In February 2021 Zaroury joined Belgian top flight side RSC Charleroi but was loaned back to Lommel to complete the season. He made his Charleroi debut against KV Oostende in July 2021 and ended the season with five goals in 39 appearances. He added another two goals in 5 appearances for Charleroi at the start of the 2022/23 season, his impressive form was attracting the attention of clubs in England. In August 2022 he joined English Championship contenders Burnley, who were managed by Belgian former Anderlecht boss Vincent Kompany. Anass quickly slotted into the Burnley first team that powered the the Championship title at the end of the 2022/23 season and though he was used in a supporting role in the first half of the 2023/24 season as the Clarets struggled at the foot of the Premier League table, he was a standout signing for Hull City when he made the loan switch in January 20224 – Zaroury scored ten goals in 49 appearances for Burnley.
In August 2024 French Ligue 1 side RC Lens paid nine million euros for his signature, he made his debut for the Blood and Gold a couple of days later against Brest.
Anass was involved in the Belgian international setup at the under-age levels – between March and August 2017 he scored one goal in 5 appearances for Belgium’s Under-17s, then in September 2017 he added two appearances for the Under-18s. In October 2021 he made his first appearance for the Under-21 side against Kazakhstan and won his eighth cap at that level in September 2022. However in November 2022 he was invited to pledge his allegiance to the Morocco senior team and was rewarded by being selected for the 2022 Qatar World Cup Finals squad. He made his senior debut for Morocco in the World Cup third place play-off against Croatia and by June 2023 he had won four senior international caps.
