Biography
Eric Appleyard Wadsworth played one game at inside right in April 1920 as the Tigers suffered player shortages immediately after World War One. He later played for Hornsea Town.
Born in Goole to a wealthy shipping merchant family that later moved to the leafy Edwardian splendour of Newland Park in Hull, the young Wadsworth joined the 5th Battalion of the East Yorkshire Regiment in 1911. He later joined the Army Cyclist Corps and served in France. In 1918 he joined the emergent Royal Air Force as Lieutenant, training as a navigator bomb aimer and rear gunner, receiving credit for two German kills. With the war over Eric married Elma Jackson in October 1918 at Stepney Methodist Chapel and moved to Hornsea.
A keen cricketer as well as footballer, Wadsworth played for Princes Avenue XI and Hornsea Town Cricket Club where he led the batting averages for several years (his father was club chairman). He even opened the batting for the East Riding County League Select XI in 1922. He died tragically young in February 1934, weeks before his 40th birthday.
