Biography

Midfielder Tyler Morton joined the Tigers on the August 2023 deadline day, on a season long loan from Premier League side Liverpool. He made his debut two weeks later against Coventry City, creating a late equalising goal and quickly established himself as a calm and progressive presence in Liam Rosenior’s first eleven. In November 2023 he scored his first Tigers goal against Swansea City and was a vital part of City’s midfield, which meant his questionable red card on New Years Day at Sheffield Wednesday left a significant temporary gap in the first eleven. He returned to play an important role alongside Jean Michael Seri that propelled City to the fringes of the play-offs, only to fall agonisingly short on the closing day of the season – in Tyler’s case, repeating the close-but-not-quite season he had a year earlier at Blackburn Rovers.
Tyler Scott Morton was born in the Wallasey district of Birkenhead and was involved in Liverpool’s academy system from the tender age of 7. After impressing for the Reds’ Under-18s and Under-23s sides he signed a long term professional contract in January 2021 and began mixing with the first team squad. After involvement with the first team during 2021/22 pre-season fixtures Tyler made his Liverpool debut in August 2021 when he started an EFL Trophy tie against Rochdale. His Premier League debut came in November 2021 against Arsenal and over the following three weeks he started Champions League ties against Porto and AC Milan. By the end of the 2021/22 season Morton had made 11 senior appearances for the Reds.
Tyler spent the 2022/23 season on loan at Championship side Blackburn Rovers, impressing with his hard working creative style as the Lancashire side narrowly missed out on qualifying for the end-of-season play-offs – he made 46 appearances for Blackburn in all competitions.
Returning to Liverpool for the 2024/25 season, Tyler was on the outer fringes of the Reds’ first team squad as Arne Slot’s side powered to the Premier League title. He made several appearances in Cup competitions, including a Champions League tie against PSV Eindhoven, and sat on the Liverpool first team bench unused throughout November and December 2024 before a shoulder injury sidelined him in February 2025. By the 2025 close season Tyler had made 17 appearances for Liverpool.
In August 2025 Morton joined French Ligue 1 side Olympique Lyon for a £15 million fee. He made his debut against RC Lens in August 2025 and quickly became an important part of OL’s first team, scoring his first goal against Lille in September 2025.
Morton won his first international honours in November 2021 when he debuted for England Under-20s against Portugal, by the end of the 2021/22 season he had made three appearances for the Under-20s. In September 2022 he twice sat unused on the England Under-21 bench in matches against Italy and Germany. He made his Under-21s debut in November 2023 against Serbia before scoring his first goal days later against Northern Ireland, then gave a man of the match performance in his third appearance against Azerbaijan in March 2024 – these three appearances were made while on loan at Hull City. Tyler added a further 10 Under-21 appearances during the 2024/25 season, peaking in June 2025 when he came off the bench and provided the assist for the extra time winner in the European Under-21 Championship Final against Germany, played in Bratislava.
