Biography
Extravagantly skilled wide man Jaden Philogene joined the Tigers on the August 2023 deadline day for a £5 million fee, the largest sum paid out by the Tigers since the Premier League days eight years previously. Philogene immediately impressed on his debut with close ball control and an unerring ability to beat his man, scoring his first goal for the club in early October 2023 at Millwall. He had struck six times by the time a knee injury sustained in early December 2023 sidelined him for six weeks – on his return he bagged the February 2024 winner against Millwall, chipped an outrageous rabona finish past Rotherham United and ended his first season at the MKM Stadium with a dozen goals and numerous plaudits from observers of the Championship and the Premier League. Those plaudits turned to concrete interest and after much courting from newly-promoted Premier League side Ipswich Town, his former club Aston Villa invoked a buy-back option and claimed his signature in July 2024 for a £18 million headline fee, from which was deducted £5 million for the sell-on clause inserted by Villa.
Jaden Richard Philogene-Bidace was born in Hammersmith, West London and attended school in Uxbridge on the western fringes of the capital. He came into football through the Pro:Direct Academy in West London and signed junior terms for Premier League side Aston Villa in January 2018, a few weeks before his 16th birthday. He was quickly recognised for his ball-playing talents at Villa and was handed his senior debut in September 2019 when he played for the Under-21 side against Salford City in an EFL Trophy match. In May 2021 he made his Premier League debut against Tottenham Hotspur, replacing Bertrand Traore in injury time. He scored his first goals for Aston Villa in August 2021, netting twice in another EFL Trophy tie against Wycombe Wanderers. By the end of the August 2023 Philogene had made 10 senior appearances for Aston Villa and scored two goals, the last coming in early August 2023 when he was a late substitute in a Premier League match against Newcastle United.
In January 2022 Jaden joined Championship side Stoke City on a half-season loan deal, scoring once in 11 appearances. During the 2022/23 season he continued his development, spending the whole season on loan at Championship side Cardiff City where he scored five goals in 39 senior appearances and announced himself as a skilful operator and potent goal threat – form that encouraged the Tigers to claim his signature in August 2023.
In July 2024 Philogene returned to Aston Villa, having greatly enhanced his reputation during the year he had been away at Hull City.
Philogene’s first international experience came in November 2020 when he was selected for England’s Under-19s to play a practice match against Derby County Under-23s – he scored a hattrick in a 8-0 victory. In September 2021 he made his debut for England’s Under-20s against Romania and took his tally at that level to four appearances by November 2021. In October 2023 his form with the Tigers led to selection for England’s Under-21 side, an honour he celebrated in grand style by scoring twice in a 9-1 shellacking of Serbia – he made his second Under-21 apperance a few days later against Ukraine then added a third cap in March 2024 when he scored against Azerbaijan.
