Biography
London-born attacking wideman Malcolm Ebiowei joined Hull City on loan in January 2023, though recovery from an injury meant he didn’t make his low octane debut for the Tigers until mid February 2023. He was handed his first start at the end of February 2023 at Bristol City and as the season wore on he occasionally found his feet, showing fleetness of foot and an ability to both link play and shoot from distance. But at other times his languid demeanour was mistaken for a perceived lack of interest and it was inevitable that at the end of his loan Liam Rosenior lacked interest in keeping him at Hull City.
Malcolm Perewari Ebiowei was born in South London to parents of Nigerian descent. He came through the junior ranks at Chelsea and, from the age of 12, Arsenal but was released by the Gunners at 16 amid concerns about his application. Malcolm had a trial at West Ham United’s academy at the end of 2019 but was not signed, then spent the 2020/21 season playing in Scotland for Glasgow Rangers’ academy. He signed a one year contract for Championship strugglers Derby County ahead of the 2021/22 season and made his Rams senior debut in a February 2022 Championship victory over Hull City, adding his first senior goal in late April 2022 against Blackpool. He left financially struggling Derby County in the 2022 close season after one goal in 16 senior appearances.
Ebiowei signed a five year deal with Premier League side Crystal Palace in June 2022 and debuted for the Eagles in August 2022 against Arsenal. Injury restricted him to just 57 minutes of football in five senior appearances ahead of his loan move to Hull City.
Returning to Crystal Palace for the 2023/24 season, Ebiowei occasionally featured as unused first team substitute and made three appearances in the Football League Trophy, scoring against Stevenage in November 2023. At the start of February 2024 Malcolm joined Belgian top flight side RWD Molenbeek on a half season loan, making his debut days later against Standard Liege, but he made just 5 appearances before returning to Palace in the summer of 2024. In August 2024 he was offered another chance to shine, joining Championship new boys Oxford United on a season-long loan.
Ebiowei qualified to play international football for several countries, in February 2018 he played twice at Under-15 level for Netherlands against Italy then six months later he played for England Under-16s against Turkey. He returned to the international scene just after his 19th birthday in September 2022, making three appearances for the England Under-20 side against Chile, Morocco and Australia.
