1127 Dogukan Sinik

Biography

Turkish international midfielder Doğukan Sinik joined Hull City in July 2022, signing a three year contract with an option for a further year, but was quickly injured in pre-season training and didn’t make his first team debut until the end of September 2022, days after returning from training with the Turkish national side. He was eased into the side as the Tigers struggled for form and was used as an impact substitute by managers Arveladze and his successor Liam Rosenior.

But signs that he had failed to settle in the Tigers’ setup became apparent in January 2023 when he was loaned back to home town Turkiye Super Lig club Antalyaspor for the rest of the 2022/23 season – Dogukan celebrated his return by scoring within the first five minutes of his second debut for the club. After an injury-hit start to the 2023/24 season Dogukan was again marginalised by City boss Liam Rosenior and in January 2024 he began a half season loan to Hatayspor, another Turkish Super Lig side, where he made 10 appearances and scored once, in March 2024 against Kayserispor, as his side slipped to relegation at the end of the season.

With Rosenior dismissed in May 2024, Sinik was given the summer to prove his fitness to the Tigers’ new manager.

Doğukan Sinik was born in the resort city of Antalya on the southern Mediterranean coast of Turkey. He came through the junior ranks at his local Turkish Super Lig side Antalyaspor and graduated to the first team in May 2015 at the age of 17 when he debuted against Elazigspor. Antalyaspor were promoted to the Super Lig that summer via the play-offs and Sinik made his top flight bow in May 2016 when he came on as late substitute in a 7-0 demolition of Trabzonspor. Dogukan made a further single appearance at the end of the 2016/17 season before spending the 2017/18 season at Turkish third tier side Kemerspor 2003, making 31 senior appearances and scoring two goals – his debut first team goal coming in December 2017 against Bergama Belediyepsor.

Returning to Antalyaspor for the 2018/2019 season, Sinik became a regular first team starter and for the next four years contributed to regular top half finishes in the Turkish League and two notable Cup runs that saw Antalyaspor reach the semi-finals in the 2019/20 season (Sinik scored in the quarter final against Sivasspor) and the Cup Final in the 2020/21 season, which they lost to Besiktas with Sinik sidelined by injury. When he left Antalyaspor in the summer of 2022 to join Hull City, he had made 123 senior appearances for the side and scored five goals.

Sinik played international football for Turkey at all levels, beginning with three appearances for the Under-16 side in April 2015. He made six appearances for the Under-18 side in 2016/17 season and in November 2017 he debuted for the Under-19 side, making nine appearances including three starts in the 2018 European Under-19s Championship finals held in Finland. He debuted for the Under-21 side in November 2018 against Scotland and added seven more Under-21 appearances in the 2019/20 season, scoring his first goal in September 2019 against England Under-21s.

In March 2022 Sinik made his senior debut for Turkey in a friendly match against Italy and added four further caps during the June 2022 round of UEFA Nations League matches, scoring twice in a 6-0 win against Lithuania. He won his first cap as a Hull City player in November 2022 against Czechia.
