Biography
Pacy striker Tyler Smith joined the Tigers in late August 2021 and went straight into the first team for his debut against Bournemouth, adding pace and hard work to City’s Championship forward line. Although he worried opposition defenders with his pace Tyler found goals hard to come by at the start of his City career and a series of niggly injuries also didn’t help. He scored his first goal for the Tigers in an FA Cup tie against Everton and followed that up with a League goal against Grant McCann’s Peterborough United. But Tyler ended his first season at City on the sidelines after the emergence of Iranian loan striker Allahyar Sayyadmanesh.
A glut of international signings during the 2022 close season didn’t prevent Smith from starting City’s first Championship game of the season against Bristol City and he contributed a goal in late August with a fine finish against Queens Park Rangers. Smith continued to play a supporting role during the latter months of 2022 as injuries robbed the side of several newly signed talents. He scored twice in a January 2023 4-1 win at Wigan, a suitable prelude to a loan move at the end of that month to League One side Oxford United. But managerial turmoil at Oxford meant Tyler only made seven appearances for the U’s and when he returned to Hull he was released in May 2023 at the end of his contract.
Tyler Gavin Junior Smith was born and raised in Sheffield and joined the Sheffield United academy as a youngster. He joined the professional ranks at the Blades in 2017 and began a series of loans in 2018 that developed him as a first team player. In the first half of the 2018/19 season Smith was loaned to Conference National side Barrow where he scored eleven times in 24 appearances. He then spent the second half of that season at League One side Doncaster Rovers – at the time managed by Grant McCann, the boss who signed him at City. Smith score twice in 14 appearances for Doncaster, then spent the 2019/20 season at League One sides Bristol Rovers (five goals in 28 appearances) and Rochdale (one goal in 4 appearances).
Tyler spent the 2020/21 season at League One side Swindon Town, scoring seven goals in his first 11 appearances and ending the season with ten goals from 26 matches. In August 2021 Smith finally made his first team debut for Sheffield United in a League Cup tie against Carlisle United, three weeks later he transferred from the Blades to Hull City for an undisclosed fee.
In June 2023 Tyler left Hull City and joined League Two side Bradford City, immediately slotting into the Bantams’ first team squad. After a modest start in front of goal Tyler struck an October 2023 hattrick in an EFL Trophy tie against Manchester City Under-21s and reached double figures for the Bantams when he netted against Doncaster Rovers in late December 2023 – he ended his first season at Valley Parade with twelve goals in 47 appearances..
