1103 Matt Smith

Biography

Talented midfielder Matt Smith joined Hull City on loan from Manchester City in August 2021 at the dawn of the start of the Championship season. He made his debut a day later when he came on as substitute in the opening fixture of the season, a thumping 4-1 win at Preston but after some rather invisible performances the Welsh international was jettisoned from Grant McCann’s first team in late September 2021. He sat on the City bench a few times during the Winter months but his loan was terminated early on the last day of January 2022 as a new Acun Ilicali-shaped broom swept through the fringe playing staff.

Matthew Robert Smith was born in Redditch in the West Midlands and spent his early years in the youth system at West Browmich Albion before switching to the Manchester City academy in 2013 at the age of 14. He spent the 2018/19 season at FC Twente, playing 34 times and helping the Dutch side win promotion to the Eredivisie. He had further loan spells at Queens Park Rangers and Charlton Athletic in 2019/20 season, then spent the 2020/21 season at Doncaster Rovers where he made 43 appearances and impressed in a League One side that spent much of the season competing for promotion before falling narrowly short. He joined the Tigers in August 2021 having yet to make his Manchester City debut but with over 90 senior appearances under his belt.

With his Hull City loan terminated in January 2022, Matt immediately made a permanent transfer to League One side Milton Keynes Dons but managed only four appearances in his first half season at Stadium MK as the Dons reached the League One play-offs. The Dons struggled during a 2022/23 season that ended in relegation to League 2, with Smith scoring two goals in 29 appearances.

In August 2023 Smith joined Scottish Premiership side St Johnstone, making his debut against Heart of Midlothian a few days later and quickly establishing himself in the Saints’ first eleven. He scored his first goal for the Pars against Dundee in February 2024 and ended his first season with that one goal in 35 appearances.

Smith qualifies to play for Wales through his grandfather and made 16 appearances at Under-17, Under-18 and Under-21 levels between 2015 and 2018. He made his senior debut for Wales against Mexico in May 2018 and was part of the Wales squad that competed for the Euro 2020 finals delayed to the summer of 2021 – despite winning his 14th Wales cap in the June 2021 pre-tournament friendly against Albania, he didn’t appear in any of Wales’s four fixtures during the finals tournament.
