11 Fred Wolfe

Biography

Centre half Wolfe spent the 1904/05 season at Hull City, a year that was the precursor to the club joining the Football League in September 1905. Wolfe played in both of City’s FA Cup ties against Stockton in September 1904. He also started 26 friendly matches during that inaugural season.

While absolute certainty has been elusive, we are 95% sure that Wolfe was born in the East London suburb of West Ham. More certain is that he played for Everton’s reserve side in late 1902 and throughout 1903, deployed on the right wing, before transferring to Lancashire League side Colne in November 1903.

After spending the 1904/05 season with the Tigers Wolfe moved to Chelsea in June 1905 where he made just one appearance in November 1905, an FA Cup tie against Crystal Palace.

In March 1907 he was found guilty of impersonating his brother George in several games for North West amateur side Ince Athletic Club, an act that was prohibited as Fred was still regarded as a professional player – the incident led to a twelve month suspension for both players and the club and bought an end to Fred’s career as a footballer.

He died in Epping, suburban East London, in 1968.
