1097 Andy Smith

Biography

Centre back Andy Smith was born in Banbury but raised in Hull and attended South Hunsley School while working his way through the City Juniors ranks. After sitting on the City bench as unused substitute several times during 2020 Andy made his first team debut in a January 2021 EFL Cup tie against Fleetwood Town and gave an assured performance. He followed that up with a substitute appearance in a League Cup tie against Wigan at the start of the 2021/22 season.

In late August 2021 he joined Salford City on a season long loan, but by the turn of the year he had made only four senior starts for the Ammies, three in the Football League Trophy and one in the FA Cup. This lack of game time led to the Tigers curtailing spell at Salford early and in January 2022 Andy was instead sent on loan to Conference National side Grimsby Town for the remainder of the season. Smith scored his first Conference goal for the Mariners against Barnet in April 2022 and ended the season with 18 appearances that culminated in a Conference National play-off victory and promotion to the Football League.

The Mariners’ return to the senior leagues prompted a second loan spell for Smith that began in July 2022 and lasted the entirety of the 2022/23 season. He scored three goals in 37 appearances for Grimsby as they consolidated their place in League 2 and embarked on an unlikely FA Cup run that saw them reach the Sixth Round before being knocked out by Premier League side Brighton & Hove Albion.

Andy returned to Hull City at the start of the 2023/24 season and made his first appearance in a League Cup tie against Doncaster Rovers. He was a regular substitute throughout the first half of the season and made his Championship debut in mid-December 2023 when coming on as a late substitute against Cardiff City. In January 2024 he joined League Two side Cheltenham Town on a half season loan, playing alongside former Hull City defender Curtis Davies at Whaddon Road.
