1093 Thomas Mayer

Biography

Pacy Austrian winger Thomas Mayer signed for City in September 2020 and made his debut in the League Cup within 24 hours. He quickly impressed with his direct running, aggressive style and wicked crosses but his form dipped as the winter months approached and a nasty knee injury ended his season prematurely in January 2021. He left the club in August 2021 to free up a squad place for returning midfielder Tom Huddlestone.

Born in the Austrian city of Linz, Mayer had a youth career with his local Austrian league side Linz LASK before joining German side VfB Stuttgart at the age of 16. He returned to Austria for the 2012/13 season, playing for SK Rapid Vienna’s second team. In 2013 he joined FC Pasching, moving on to second tier side FC Liefering a year later. He spent two years on loan back at Linz LASK, rejoining them permanently in 2016. In 2019 he joined Austrain second division side Austria Lustenau where he played regularly, scored six times and hit double figures for assists. He was a free agent when he signed for Hull City in September 2020.

In August 2021 Mayer returned to Austria and signed for 2.Liga side SKU Amstetten, in two seasons he scored nine goals in 58 appearances for the promotion contenders. In August 2023 he moved to Austrian 2.Liga promotion contenders Grazer AK 1902 and helped his new side to top the division by the New Year break.

Mayer played twice for Austria’s under-16 side in 2010, adding three under-17 caps in 2011.
