Biography

James Jon Berry joined Hull City from Wigan Athletic’s academy in November 2019, the Wigan-born forward had played for Liverpool’s academy as a teenager and had been an unused substitute for a Wigan first team fixture in November 2017. James made his Hull City debut in February 2020 and joined the first team squad at the start of Grant McCann’s 2020/21 League One campaign, however a serious injury curtailed his contribution before it began. In July 2021 his contract was terminated by mutual consent, allowing him to find a new club.

In August 2021 Berry joined National League side Altrincham but he was unable to break into the first team and was quickly loaned to North West Counties League club Macclesfield. He made a permanent transfer to Macclesfield in March 2022 and ended the 2021/22 season with 22 goals in 38 appearances. That form continued in the 2022/23 season with Macclesfield elevated to the Northern Premier League and Berry netting 26 times in 35 appearances.

In August 2023, now sporting a new moniker James Berry-McNally, he signed for National League challengers Chesterfield, making his debut a couple of days later against Oxford City. He was used as impact substitute for much of the first half of the 2023/24 season and was used more regularly as a starter as the season progressed – the Spireites won promotion to League Two at a canter and Berry scored seven goals.

Elevated to League Two, Berry was now a part of Chesterfield’s first eleven and he scored three goals in the Spireites opening three League fixtures of the season including a brace against Crewe Alexandra. He remained an important part of the Chesterfield side and by January 2025 he had scored sixteen goals for the Spireites in 64 appearances.

In January 2025 Berry signed for League One title contenders Wycombe Wanderers and made his Chairboys debut in March 2025 against Peterborough United, but made just 3 appearances during the remainder of the 2024/25 season as Wycombe Wanderers qualified for the play-offs only to lose at the semi-final stage to Charlton Athletic. In August 2025 Berry returned to League Two side Chesterfield on a season long loan, making his second Spireites debut in September 2025 against Bromley and scoring his first goal a fortnight later against Colchester United. He played a supporting role as Chesterfield qualified for the play-offs only to lose at the semi-final stage to Notts County – despite this setback Berry had a successful season in Derbyshire that yielded five goals in 38 appearances.

In June 2026 Berry took a step down the league ladder, joining National League side Forest Green Rovers on loan for the 2026/27 season. He made his debut for Rovers in August 2026 against Halifax Town.
