Biography

George Jacketts was a Hull-born left half who had been around the Hull football scene for over ten years when he made his two City appearances in September 1919, during the opening months of the season that saw the Football League return to action after World War One.
Jacketts had been associated with some of the more successful local sides in the Hull area before the war, lifting the East Riding Senior Cup with Oriental FC in 1910 and Hull Tivoli in 1914. During the war Jacketts joined City’s ranks, making his debut in November 1915 and from late 1916 until 1919 he was a regular, starting a total of 95 non-senior wartime games.
Jacketts remained on the fringes of the Hull City first team during the rest of the 1919/20 season but was released in the 1920 close season and joined Ebbw Vale, who were playing in the short-lived Southern League Welsh Section. His time in the Welsh valleys lasted only a few weeks and he returned to the East Riding, giving three years service to Bridlington Town. Jacketts was part of three more East Riidng Senior Cup winning teams – Hull City Reserves in 1920 and Bridlington Town twice in 1921 and 1922. In 1926 he was still playing local football, selected for a Hull United team based on Marfleet Lane.
By 1949 Jacketts was living in Springfield Road and writing to the Hull Daily Mail about his East Riding Cup victories and his longevity as a footballer. He died in Hull in July 1957.
