1069 Matt Ingram

Biography

Goalkeeper Matt Ingram joined City in June 2019 on a three year deal from Queens Park Rangers, deputising for George Long and making his debut impressively in the League Cup at Tranmere Rovers. He continued to be used as Cup goalkeeper during the 2019/20 season and deputised for Long once during the club’s end of the season slump.

At the start of the 2020/21 season Ingram was preferred to Long as first choice goalkeeper and he contributed richly to City’s League One title winning season with calm control of his penalty area and agile shot stopping during key moments. He kept his first team berth for the Tigers’ return to the Championship in the 2021/22 season, holding off the challenge of Chelsea loan keeper Nathan Baxter until the winter months, then returning to first team action in February 2022. He again dropped out of the first team in April 2022 and at the end of that month, after City had secured their Championship place for another season, he joined Championship rivals Luton Town on a short-term emergency loan that saw him make 4 first team appearances during the closing weeks of the regular season and the Hatters’ subsequent play-off campaign.

Ingram was restored to the City first team at the start of the 2022/23 season having signed a new three year contract and competed again with Chelsea loanee Nathan Baxter for the first team spot between the posts, winning the battle from November 2022 onwards. He started the 2023/24 season as Liam Rosenior’s first choice goalkeeper but the signing of Ryan Allsop at the end of August 2023 saw Matt dropped to the bench, where he stayed for the rest of the season save for a January 2024 appearance in the FA Cup. Having seen his stock fall so dramatically, it was natural that Matt would seek pastures new even after Rosenior left the club – he departed in July 2024.

Matthew Robert Ingram was born in High Wycombe and his career began at his local club Wycombe Wanderers. He came to prominence as a teenager, sitting on the first team bench unused in August 2010 while still 16 years of age, attracting the attention of England’s selectors for a goalkeeper’s training camp then spending two months on work experience at Isthmian League side Lewes between March and May 2012 – when he returned to Wycombe in May 2012 he signed his first professional contract.

Matt improved his reputation during the 2012/13 season with loan spells at Conference South side Hayes & Yeading (August to October 2012, 4 appearances) and Conference North side Oxford City (October 2012 to March 2013, 20 appearances). When he returned to Wycombe in March 2013 he was drafted into the first team squad and made his Football League debut at the end of the month against Accrington Stanley – he went on to start eight consecutive matches for the Chairboys. He was now an established first choice at Adams Park and was ever present for the first team during both the 2013/14 and 2014/15 seasons. By the middle of the 2015/16 season Ingram was recognised as the best ranked goalkeeper in League Two having made 141 senior appearances for the Chairboys.

In January 2016 Matt signed for Championship side Queens Park Rangers. While his first team chances at Loftus Road were limited to only 19 senior appearances for the Rs over three and a half seasons, he continued to build his reputation with a loan spell at Northampton Town between September 2017 and January 2018 (20 appearances) and a brief temporary return to Wycombe Wanderers in November 2018 (1 appearance). He left Queens Park Rangers in June 2019 and signed for Hull City.

In January 2011 Matt was selected for an England international goalkeeper’s training camp, though he never made a representative appearance for his country.
