Biography
Arthur Laurence Charlesworth was born in Morley, his father Albert also hailed from the Leeds area and was a cricketer who had played for Yorkshire in 1893 and 1894 and was later employed as club professional at Hull Town CC. Arthur signed professional terms for the Tigers in August 1919 after having played Forces football in London at the end of World War One while working as a searchlight operator – he also played in one wartime league match for Hull City in October 1918. He scored on his Tigers debut against Stoke in September 1919 and although he was used as a backup centre forward for the next two seasons, he was a regular goalscorer when called upon.
Arthur left the Tigers in the 1921 close season and in May 1921 he joined Worksop Town, scoring regularly in the 1921/22 season as the Tigers (of Nottinghamshire) won the Midland League title. In June 1922 he joined Doncaster Rovers, an ambitious Midland League side that had just applied unsuccessfully to join Division Three North. Arthur flitted in and out of the Rovers side for much of the 1922/23 season before joining Midland League rivals York City in April 1923. After the 1923/24 season with the Minstermen, in which Arthur scored regularly, he joined Yorkshire League side Bridlington Town in August 1924 and stayed with the East Coast club for several seasons.
After football Charlesworth returned to the East Riding and settled in Cottingham, passing away in January 1966.
