Biography
Attacking midfielder Powell signed for the Tigers on loan in January 2016, bringing a reputation for past glories and recent obscurity. He was injured almost as soon as he arrived and failed to leave a strong impression on Steve Bruce’s side. It is nevertheless rumoured that Bruce’s insistence on signing Powell, and the club hierarchy’s refusal to comply, was one of several factors that led to the club’s most successful manager resigning in July 2016, days before the notorious “nine first team players” training trip to Austria.
A youngster at Crewe Alexandra’s famous academy, Powell had over 50 first team appearances under his belt when he signed for Manchester United at the age of 18. But the big move proved daunting for the young midfielder and he failed to make any impression on the Old Trafford first team, resulting to three loans to the Championship.
Powell’s Manchester United contract expired in Summer 2016 and he signed for Championship side Wigan Athletic – who nine months later were League One side Wigan, despite Powell netting an 11 minute hattrick in a 3-2 win against Barnsley. After another 12 months and he again played for Championship Wigan, having been a prominent part of their 2017/18 title winning season and attracted transfer attention from a number of higher level clubs. A further successful season in the Championship saw Powell reach the end of his Wigan contract, and in June 2019 he switched to Stoke City.
After an injury early in the season Powell settled into the first team at Stoke, especially once Michael O’Neill was appointed manager. After a decent season in 2019/20 Powell’s form improved in the 2020/21 season as Stoke finished mid-table in the Championship and Powell netted 12 times in 42 appearances. He remained at Stoke for another two seasons and when he left the Potters in May 2023 he had scored 28 goals in 119 appearances.
In July 2023 Powell joined ambitious League 2 side Stockport County, made his August 2023 debut against Gillingham and scored his first goal for the Hatters against MK Dons in September 2023. He was a fringe player in the first half of the 2023/24 season but came to the fore as the season wore on and scored three goals in 34 appearances as the Hatters lifted the League Two title and won promotion to League One.
Powell was capped for England at all youth levels from under-16 and under-21.
