Biography

Patrick Dickinson was a Canadian youngster who hailed from Vancouver, though his parents were both from Hull – this explained why he rebuffed approaches from Arsenal and Ipswich Town as a youngster and instead chose to play youth team football at Hull City while staying with his aunt in Hull. He was already a Canadian youth international when he travelled to the city in the summer of 1995 and sought a trial with Terry Dolan’s Tigers, who were becalmed in the lower reaches of the lower leagues. Dickinson was recruited into City’s YTS setup in September 1995 and made his debut against Doncaster Rovers in March 1997.
During the close season Dolan was jettisoned and replaced by Mark Hateley, who saw promise in the young Canadian and gave him three consecutive starts at right back during August 1997. He dropped out of the first eleven and the subsequent loan signing of Matt Hocking shut down further opportunities.
Dickinson returned to Canada in the 1998 close season, joining North Amercian League side Vancouver 86ers. He also went on to make 9 appearances for the Canada Under-20 side and 8 appearances for the Canada Under-21 team.
