Biography

James Thomas Medcalf was a teenage saw mill worker who was born in Scarborough and raised in Hull and Nottinghamshire. He had been associated with Notts County prior to joining the Tigers in August 1914. He started the first two league games of the 1914/15, filling in for the absent John Lee, but when the Sheffield born left winger returned to fitness Medcalf was dropped and didn’t play for Hull City, or anyone else, again.
He served in the King’s Own Yorkshire Light Infantry during World War 1, and was invalided out of the Army in 1918. He returned to his first career and became a wood machinist in Hull. He died in the city in 1980.
