Biography
James Thomas Medcalf was a teenage saw mill worker who was born in Scarborough and raised in Hull and Nottinghamshire. He had been associated with Notts County prior to joining the Tigers in August 1914. He started the first two league games of the 1914/15 season, filling in for the absent John Lee. But when the Sheffield born left winger returned to fitness Medcalf was dropped and didn’t play for Hull City, or anyone else, again.
Medcalf joined the King’s Own Yorkshire Light Infantry later in 1914 and served during World War One – he was invalided out of the Army in 1918. He returned to his first career and became a wood machinist, working at a shipyard in Hessle in 1921 and living in the house he grew up in just off Hessle Road in central Hull. By 1939 he was still working as wood machinst but had moved to a home off Newland Avenue in west Hull. He later moved to Mayfield Street off Spring Bank and died in Hull in June 1980.
