133 Henry Ryley

Biography

Outside left Henry Seymour Ryley was on trial at Hull City at the end of the 1920/21 season when he was given a first team start in the final game of the season – he evidently did not impress as he was not signed and did not reappear for other clubs.

The story of Ryley’s only match is a curious one. On the Friday prior to the fixture the Hull Daily Mail trumpeted about “a player of considerable reputation in the North of England” being trialled at outside left in the City first team in readiness to be signed up for the following season. By Monday’s edition that had been downgraded to a mention of Ryley, an amateur player “19 years of age and on the light side”. Despite the obvious age disparity we believe that Henry Seymour Ryley was this triallist – what happened to the player with a considerable reputation in the North of England is anyone’s guess, it appears he didn’t show up if he existed at all.

Another chap called Herbert Sidney Augustus Ryley from Bolton has also been identified by some football statisticians as a potential candidate, principally because another newspaper reported a link to the North West of England. However our judgement is that it is more likely to have been Henry Seymour Ryley from Hull that played.
