1088 Alfie Jones

Biography

Defender and midfielder Alfie Jones joined City in September 2020 on a one year deal. He made his debut a few days later in the EFL Trophy and quickly ingratiated himself with the City faithful by scoring the winning penalty in a League Cup shoot-out victory over Leeds United. As the season developed Jones became a first team choice at either centre half and in a defensive midfield role – when Richie Smallwood suffered an injury in February 2021 it was Alfie who stepped up and performed the defensive midfielder role with aplomb, then he stepped back into defence to replace injured Reece Burke and impressed just as much.

In May 2021 he signed a new two year deal, staying with the Tigers as they returned to the Championship and forming a central defensive partnership with Jacob Greaves that became a strong triumvariate with the addition of Sean McLoughlin. As the Tigers survived their first season back in the second tier and negotiated the transition to Acun Illicali’s ownership, Jones continued to play well and netted his first goal in a late-season victory over Reading.

He began the 2022/23 season on the right side of a back three, combining his tough tackling with striding out of defence and setting up attacks. He retained his shirt when caretaker manager Andy Dawson reverted to a back four once Shota Arveladze had departed from the scene. When Dawson handed on the reins to Liam Rosenior Alfie retained his place and became an important part of City’s emerging ball-playing back four, during what remained of the 2022/23 season and throughout the 2023/24 season, during which Alfie missed only one game following the birth of his first child.

During the 2024 close season Alfie’s manager Liam Rosenior and centre back partner Jacob Greaves both left the club, but he remained an important figure in the heart of new manager Tim Walter’s defence. He was also used by Walter’s replacement Ruben Selles until the closing weeks of the 2024/25 season when more experienced defender John Egan was preferred in what became a nervy but ultimately successful battle against relegation. After a summer of speculation Alfie left the Tigers in July 2025 after five years of superb service to the club.

Alfie Charles Jones was born in Bristol and came through the academy system at Premier League side Southampton. He made his first team debut for the Saints in an August 2016 EFL Trophy tie against Charlton Atheltic and made three further senior appearances in the EFL Trophy that season. He added three more EFL Trophy appearances in the 2017/18 season and scoring his first senior goal against Cambridge United in October 2017.

Between August and December 2018 Alfie was loaned to Scottish Premiership side St Mirren where he scored one goal, against Livingston in December 2018, in 15 appearances. He then spent the whole 2019/20 season at League One side Gillingham, scoring two goals in 35 appearances. He left Southampton to join Hull City in September 2020 having made 7 senior appearances for the Saints, all for the U21 side in the EFL Trophy.

In July 2025 Alfie left Hull City and joined Championship rivals Middlesbrough, a £3 million fee was paid for his services. He made his Boro debut against Swansea City in August 2025, then scored his first goal for the Teessiders a week later against Millwall and became an instant fixture in manager Rob Edwards’ first team as his side challenged for the Championship title.
