Biography

West Country striker Jarrod Bowen, whose father had played for Merthyr Tydfil FC, signed for the Tigers in July 2014 after impressing during his debut season for Hereford United, who promptly became defunct that summer. After establishing himself in the City reserve team he made his debut during August 2016 in the League Cup at Exeter City and found favour from January 2017 onwards as Marco Silva arrived in the managerial seat, making his first League start in the final match of the season against Tottenham Hotspur.
Bowen started the following season in the first team, scored his first senior goal in the opening fixture of the season at Aston Villa and hit double figures by mid November in Slutsky’s struggling but free-scoring side. While continuing to be a first team regular under Nigel Adkins his goals per game ratio dropped, but he did bookend his first full season nicely by scoring the equaliser in the final fixture at Brentford.
In the 2018/19 season Bowen again scored regularly and totalled up another 10 goals by the end of December, simultaneously propelling the Tigers up the Championship table and attracting serious interest from Premier League chequebook-wavers. By the Spring of 2019 Jarrod has passed the 20 goal mark and set a City record by scoring in eight consecutive home League matches.
After a summer of transfer talk that came to nothing, the first game of the 2019/20 season saw Jarrod make his 100th senior appearance for City and he was rapidly amongst the goals again, hitting double figures in the League with a late-November brace against Preston. On the January 2020 transfer deadline day the player and club finally succumbed to interest from the Premier League and Jarrod signed a contract for West Ham United that extended to 2025, in return for a £14m fee that could rise to £20m. Bowen left the Tigers as one of the most potent and popular strikers in fifty years, since the days of Wagstaff and Chilton.
Bowen made 13 starts for West Ham in the remainder of the 2019/20 season and scored his first Premier League goal in a February 2020 3-1 win over Southampton. The 2020/21 season saw Jarrod establsh himself as a first team for West Ham, making 36 appearances and scoring 8 goals as the Hammers qualified for Euopean competition. His form continued into the 2021/22 season, 18 goals in all competitions propelling him onto the international stage. He continued to be one of the Premier League’s most potent wide forwards and in June 2023 his West Ham side won the Europa Conference League final in Prague against Italian Serie A side Fiorentina with Jarrod slotting home the last monute winner. What a journey!
At the start of the 2023/24 season Bowen’s goals helped propel the Hammers to the upper reaches of the Premier League table, he ended the season with 20 goals in all competitions – including a February 2024 hattrick against Brentford – and an England call-up. He was appointed the Hammers’ first team captain in August 2024.
At the end of the 2021/22 season Jarrod was called up to England international squad by manager Gareth Southgate, just reward for four seasons of consistent goalscoring at Championship and Premier League levels. His debut came in an early June Nations League tie against Hungary and he won three further caps in the next 10 days against Germany, Italy and Hungary again. After a spell out of Southgate’s plans, Bowen returned to the England fold in October 2023 and by May 2024 he was chosen for Southgate’s last tournament finals squad for Euro 2024 in Germany – England reached the final only to lose to Spain with Jarrod winning two caps in the group stage against Serbia and Denmark to reach 10 caps.
