186 Joseph Murray

Biography

Left footed utility player Joseph Murray was born in Hull and joined the Tigers from Dairycoates FC as a teenage amateur in February 1926, signing his first professional terms four months later in June 1926. In April 1926 he started three matches at inside left forward but it took another two and half years for him to make another first team appearance, in December 1928 against Nottingham Forest when he played at inside right.

In March and April 1930 Murray started four matches as the Tigers juggled a lengthy FA Cup run with a fight for Division Two survival, playing two matches at outside left and two at left half. During this spell he scored his only goal for the Tigers in a 1-0 victory over Oldham Athletic. After relegation to Division Three North Joseph played in more first team games during the 1930/31 season, mostly at left half, before leaving the Tigers in May 1931.

In August 1931 Murray joined Division Three North rivals Lincoln City but made just one senior appearance against Stockport County in October 1931 – he retired from playing later that season due to a knee injury.

By the end of the 1930s Murray was working for Hull City Water Board as a pipelayer then served in the military during World War Two. After the war he worked as a coal trimmer on Hull Docks and as a general labourer. He retired to his home just north of Holderness Road and celebrated his golden wedding anniversary in 1977. He died in March 1988.
