Biography
Left sided midfielder Lawford joined City in the 1994 close season and slotted straight into Terry Dolan’s first team. He was a regular starter during 1994/95 and had a notable spell in October 2004 when he scored three goals in four games. However as time wore on Lawford’s form dropped. In his second season, the form of his team-mates dropped collectively as City limped to only five wins all seasons and a crashing relegation. Dolan persisted with Lawford, switching him between starting place and bench, for most of the season and Craig was perhaps unfortunate to become a ex-Bradford totem of ex-Bradford Terry Dolan’s decrepitude as a manager. His form was hit sufficiently hard that Lawford dropped out of the professional game in the summer of 1996, signing for Cleckheaton-based Northern Counties East League side Liversedge. By 1998 he was also playing for Oakenshaw in the Bradford Sunday Alliance League, a club he remained with until at least 2004.
Born in Dewsbury, Lawford began his career at Bradford City and debuted for the Bantams in May 1990 as the age of 17 and a half. It was over two years later before he made the first team a second time and across five seasons he made 28 appearances for Bradford, scoring just once in November 1992 at Wigan Athletic. He was released by new Bradford manager Lennie Lawrence in May 1994 and joined the Tigers on a free transfer.
