469 Ben Bridges

Biography

Inside forward Benjamin “Ben” or “Benny” Bridges, was born in Hull and played junior football for Setting Dyke in the early 1950s. He trained as a joiner while serving Hull City’s A team in the 1956/57 season and signed part-time professional terms in July 1957. He made his first team debut a few months later during the annual hectic festive period where three or four fixtures in a week were common place – but as reported in the Hull Daily Mail Benny did not impress and he rapidly returned to the Reserves.

Ben stayed at City for another two years while serving his National Service and scored regularly for the Reserves, but did not make another first team start. In May 1960 Bridges guested for Bridlington Town in a friendly match against a representative side from the Green Howards regiment, but in July 1960 he joined Midland League rivals Scarborough Town, signing full professional terms for the first time. A year later in July 1961 Bridges eventually joined Yorkshire League side Bridlington Town where he scored regularly for two seasons.

In August 1963 he signed for Yorkshire League rivals Hull Brunswick before hanging up his boots at the end of the 1965/66 season. He managed Setting Dyke in the Hull Sunday League and turned out for the Ex-Tigers XI in the early 1970s as well as occasionally returning to Hull Brunswick when they were short up front. In September 1972 he rejoined Hull Brunswick as both player and caretaker manager, deputising for absent first team manager Ken Smales and staying in the first team until Christmas 1972.
