34 Walter Dagnall

Biography

Left winger Walter Dagnall joined Hull City in May 1906 and stayed just one season, making eight appearances and scoring twice – once in a November 1906 1-0 win over Lincoln and once a 1-2 defeat in the reverse victory the following March. Ill health affected his progress at Hull and he left in the 1907 close season.

One of a number of players in City’s early years born in Prescot near Liverpool, Dagnall made his name at Lancashire Combination side St Helens Recreation after starting his career at Prescot. He returned briefly to St Helens Recs after his season at City before joining Sklemersdale United, then saw out his career at Prescot Athletic and Rossendale United. Dagnall came from a footballing family and several namesakes were contemporaries in the Lancashire football scene of the early 20th century.
