320 Charles Robinson

Biography

Experienced right half Robinson joined Hull City from Plymouth Argyle in June 1937. In the 1937/38 season he was a first team regular but missed two months of football in January and February 1938 after sustaining an injury in an FA Cup tie against Huddersfield Town. When he returned to first team action the Tigers were in the promotion places but a defeat and a draw in the last two games saw City narrowly miss out on a return to Division Two.

Charles kept his first team shirt through the 1938/39 season, missing only one League fixture all season and scoring the first of his four goals for the Tigers in September 1938 against Barrow – he also scored a long-range goal in City record victory, 11-1 against Carlisle United in January 1939. He was retained for the 1939/40 season that was curtailed and abandoned due to the outbreak of World War Two bought the Football League to a halt, going on to make three starts in wartime fixtures between August and October 1939 before leaving the club and returning to Rotherham at the end of 1939.

Charles Robinson, often known as Charlie, was born in Rotherham and played for Silverwood Colliery before joining Rotherham United in 1929 close season. He made his senior debut in a November 1929 FA Cup tie against Ashington and kept his place at right half for three months and 16 appearances as the Millers slumped towards the lower reaches of the Division Three North table. In March 1930 he signed for Division Two side Wolverhampton Wanderers and served the Reserves team for a year but failed to break into the senior squad at Molineux. In May 1931 he transferred to Division Three South side Coventry City but again was unable to add further first team experience during the 1931/32 season.

In September 1932 Charles joined Division Three North side Stockport County and on the banks of the River Mersey he finally rediscovered the ability to play regular first team football for the Edgeley Park outfit. His debut for the Hatters came against Barrow in December 1932 and he scored his first goal for the club in January 1933 against Doncaster Rovers. Robinson was a regular first team choice during the next three seasons as Stockport flirted with, but didn’t quite achieve, promotion to Division Two. In the 1934/35 season Charles played in all eight matches as Stockport eliminated two Division Two sides to reach the FA Cup Quarter Finals, where they were defeated by Division One side West Bromwich Albion – he also played in the Hatters’ Third Division Cup campaign that ended in the trophy being claimed after defeating Walsall in the May 1935 final played at Manchester City’s Maine Road ground. When Robinson left Stockport County in June 1936 he had scored eleven goals in 134 appearances.

In June 1936 Robinson joined Division Two side Plymouth Argyle but was once again unable to break into the first team and departed the club a year later to join Hull City.

He died in 1972.
