197 Charlie Lloyd

Biography

Full back Charles Frederick “Charlie” Lloyd joined Hull City in late April 1926. Born and raised in Newcastle’s West End, Lloyd started out as a teenage footballer with North Eastern League side Preston Colliery in December 1924. In August 1925 he switched to divisional rivals Percy Main, from whom City signed him eight months later. A versatile left and right sided full back, Lloyd served City’s Reserves throughout his first season and was handed a first team debut at right back in February 1927 due to the retirement of experienced Scotsman Jock McGee. Lloyd vied with Jock Gibson for the right back shirt for the last two months of the season, with Gibson coming out on top and making the right back position his own during the 1927/28 season. This consigned Lloyd back to City’s Reserves and he was handed a free transfer in May 1928.

Charlie joined Division Three South side Southend United in August 1928 and spent one season by the Thames Estuary, making just one start against Watford in November 1928. He joined Midland League side Loughborough Corinthians in June 1929 and during his two year stay with the Leicestershire side he was elevated to club captain.

In August 1931 Lloyd was tempted back into Football League action when he signed for Division Three South side Mansfield Town. His two years at Field Mill yielded a single appearance in his first season, against Thames FC in November 1931. After the Stags switched to Division Three North during the 1932 close season, Lloyd added four appearances in the latter half of the 1932/33 season, one of which was against his former club Hull City (the Tigers won 4-1).

Lloyd was released by Mansfield Town in the 1933 close season and appeared to give up the professional game (a suggestion in some sources that he joined Ripley Town was not verified, that was a young man signed from Derby County also called Lloyd). By 1939 Charlie was living in the north Sheffield suburb of Shirecliffe and working in the aircraft manufacturing industry. He remained in Sheffield, later living in Frecheville to the south east of the city, which is where he died in April 1979.
