118 William Henzell

Biography

Inside right William Henzell joined the Tigers in June 1920 from Walker Celtic, a rich source of Tyneside talent in City’s early decades. He was immediately introduced into the first team and scored on his debut. However in just his second appearance two days later he was involved in a collision with Birmingham’s Percy Barton, who later had seven caps for England. This clash saw Henzell suffer concussion, unconciousness and hospital visit, injuries that ended his playing career. The brutality of football in the early twentieth century writ large.

Henzell returned to the North East after his injury, played a few years of junior football and worked as a civil servant in South Shields. He lived a long life and died in the Heaton suburb of Newcastle Upon Tyne in November 1985.
