| Comment The finest player to wear the black and amber in the 1990s, Deano combined touch, skill, guile and aggression to devastating effect. It was testament to his loyalty that he stayed in his home town for so long. In the end his inability to work with the disciplinarians Dolan and Lee that saw him leave for Scottish shores. His Aberdeen career was a success in terms of goals, but he never recovered from the ignominy of being sent off three times in a single game for fouling, swearing and flattening a corner flag. He soon returned to England under former colleague Mal Shotton, then seven figure fees saw him join Premiership Bradford and Middlesbrough, providing him the deserved chance to parade his talents on the highest stage. Windass eventually returned to Bradford, by now on the third tier of the League, and scored plenty of goals in his dotage. He was regularly linked with the Tigers throughout the reign of Peter Taylor but that transfer never happened - perhaps because Taylor reckoned Dean's larger than life character would upset the obedient dressing room that had been cultivated. In the Summer of 2006 Premiership Wigan had a £500,000 offer for Windass's services turned down, then in January 2007 the conquering hero finally returned as Deano, aged 37 and 9 months, was loaned to Phil Brown's Tigers to fill after a long term injury to Nick Barmby. The loan was made permanent that summer after eight vital goals from the big man saw City stumble clear of relegation. Dean's most glorious moment came at 3:38pm on 24th May 2008, when he received a delicate reverse cross from Fraizer Campbell and struck a first time shot into the top right corner of the Wembley net - the goal that secured play-off victory and elevation to the Premier League. Already a bona fide City hero, this moment ensured his place in the Tigers' history books for ever more. A great, great man. Alas by Xmas 2008 Windass was brawling with Marlon King and sounding off in the press about his lack of Premier League opportunities under Phil Brown, and he was loaned to Oldham Athletic. At Boundary Park he was soon creating further fairytales, spending a half in goal against runaway League leaders Leicester and keeping a clean sheet, before returning under another cloud after a feisty team bonding trip to the greyhounds. Dean finally left the KC in June 2009 to take the assistant manager's post at Darlington and continued to play occasionally in his 41st year before announcing his playing retirement on being sacked along with Darlo boss Colin Todd in October 2009. Dean is now searching for a managerial post, a truly remarkable prospect. |
