A youthful left back who failed to make the grade after a short City career in the early 80s, Thompson then re-emerged on the scene when Scarborough were elected to the League. Went on to have a successful career in the upper divisions, and had a brief spell as player-manager of York City before the ultimate insult was meted out - he was replaced by Terry Dolan.  Thompson returned to Scarborough where it all first happened for him to become manager for the Seasiders.  Subsequently he moved to Boston United and after a temporary spell in charge while Steve Evans was suspended for contractual irregularities, he led the league new boys to a successful first season despite being docked 4 points before they started.
