Returning to his native East Coast after an unsuccessful spell in the Home Counties, Swales was signed by Warren Joyce to cover the awkward left back role.  Swales spent much of his time as a squad player, and no more.  He showed his best form (least worst?) when Brian Little took the City helm, but fell out of favour in Spring 2001 and was released that summer.
