Hull City (1) 2   Manchester City (0) 1

The fine form continues as the Tigers swot aside the multi millionaires of Manchester City, rendering them disjointed with a tremendous display with Jozy Altidore emotional Premier League opener and a refulgent Boateng swipe.

Report by James Lockwood.

The Kingston Communications Stadium at The Circle witnessed on of the finest displays of centre forward display ever witnessed at the stadium. Up against an expensively assembled opposing back line, the constant running, battling, heading, passing and finally a goal, the forward caused no end of problems. Ladies and Gentlemen, I present to you Mr Josmer Volmy Altidore

Of course, this was no one man show. I'm sure if 10 different match reporters suggested their man of the match, you would be offered 10 different candidates. Perhaps the only player from the starting line-up who would miss out would be Glyn Myhill, which is not a damning comment about his display, but more the all round display of his fellow team mates gave Boaz one of his quieter afternoons in recent games.

Naming an unchanged line-up from the team who secured a point against Chelsea, City lined up with:

Glyn Oliver Myhill
Paul David McShane, Steven Mouyokolo, Anthony Gardner, Andrew Stuart Dawson
Craig Anthony Fagan, Thomas Cairney, George Boateng, Stephen Patrick Hunt
Jan Johannes Vennegoor of Hesselink, Josmer Volmy Altidore

Not only was the early play seeing attacking threat offered by Hull City, but most of the first half saw more threats on the Citizens goal than the Tigers. An early warning to the opposing defence saw Hesselink hold the ball up at the edge of the area before laying the ball back to Cairney and out wide to Hunt. His cross finds Fagan running in at the back post, only to shoot wide from a tight angle.

With barely three minutes on the clock, Jozy's torment of the opposing defence commenced. He breaks towards the left hand angle of the box, leaving the Ivory Coast defender Toure with little option to bring him down and have his name taken by referee Philip Dowd. The resulting free kick is tapped short for Altidore to shoot, only to see his free kick deflected wide.

Manchester City gain a few half chances, without troubling Myhill's goal. Firstly a goal kick finds McShane, but a poor returning ball sees Tevez searching for the loose ball, only for Mouyokolo to spot the danger and get the ball back to Myhill. The next chance sees Manchester City break forward, outnumbering the home defence, but the threat is soon gone as a poor pass by Barry is not read by Bellamy, allowing the ball to trickle out for a goal kick.

At the other end of the pitch, Hull City's attacking threat continues to trouble the Manchester City back line into conceding daft fouls. Hunt and predictably Altidore draw a foul from young centre back Boyata near the corner flag, but a very poor free kick from Hunt barely passes the first man, allowing Manchester City to clear. The next City attack sees Dowd dish out another yellow card to the young defender. Yet again the fouled player is Altidore, as the two players advance up the left, Boyata clearly has a handful of the American's shirt. The free kick again sees Hunt's free kick fail to beat the first man, but the loose ball finds Altidore who passes sideways to his strike partner, only for Hesselink to hit his shot across the front of the goal and narrowly wide for a goal kick.

Barry wins the away team a very soft free kick, tumbling under the slightest Fagan touch. His resulting kick finds Adebayor beyond the back post, where he can only guide his header wide.

At the other end, City finally break the deadlock and take the lead. Once again Altidore's strength hold the ball up, winning a throw-in. The throw is sent to Boateng whose pass finds Hesselink at the edge of the area. His lay-off to Altidore gives the young American space to place his shot wide of Given and into the back of the net.

Keeping hold of the initiative, Hull City continue to threaten the away side. Firstly with Hesselink getting up the left before pulling the ball back to Fagan to shoot wide, Next up Hunt is brought down by the despairing Zabaleta, only for Cairney's free kick to be cleared. Finally Fagan and the very disappointing Ireland to tussle by the corner flag, seeing the Irish man lash out at Craig. With that going unpunished, Altidore picks up the loose ball before the attack is cleared.

As the final minutes of the half tick by, Manchester City finally start to offer a genuine threat on the Hull City goal. Firstly Zabaleta eludes a Fagan challenge before crossing to the back post to the rather lazy Tevez. The Argentinean finally comes to life, but is thwarted by Mouyokolo. Manchester City continue to build, but their efforts are stopped by a stubborn Hull City team, meaning Bellamy can only put his 30 yard shot well over the bar. The final action of the half sees Bridge get to the left side dead ball line. His low cross finds Adebayor, but his shot goes over.

Fagan is the first name taken in the second half. Craig initially has possession and advances slowly up the right wing, allowing Bellamy to get back and win possession only for Fagan to hack him down.

Altidore is still not letting up his battle with the Manchester City back line. From a Hunt throw in, Boyata can only halt Jozy's progress by pulling him back. The free kick is hit to the back post by Hunt, allowing Given to claim the ball.

After Given slices a clearance into the East stand, Dawson & Hunt combine up the left before crossing to Altidore. Jozy manages to show great strength getting through the Manchester City defence before being brought down by Toure. Unfortunately Dowd sees no offence and waves play on. Soon afterwards Hull City extend their lead. Fagan skips past a Manchester City challenge, before finally winning a corner off Toure. Hunt's corner is initially cleared to the edge of the area where Boateng hits a great drive through a packed penalty area and past Given's outstretched arm into the back of the net.

Manchester City immediately respond by replacing the ineffective Ireland, who'd been asked to play a very withdrawn role compared to the freedom offered last season when he caused us many more problems in an advanced role, with new signing Adam Johnson.

The change clearly had a positive effect for Manchester City. A Johnson run up the right sees him cross to Adebayor at the back post, only to head wide.

Soon afterwards, Manchester City get a goal back. A long ball up to Adebayor is initially cleared by Gardner. Barry, picking up the loose ball finds Tevez whose shot is palmed out for a corner. The corner is played into the area, where as scramble leaves Adebayor space to poke the ball home from close range.

Manchester City make another change with Patrick Vieira replacing Bellamy

Jozy wins yet another free kick on the right, allowing Hunt to cross in, which is cleared to Boateng. His cross finds Altidore who can only drag his shot wide.

Altidore is soon replaced. It's not clear whether he'd taken a knock in the previous foul, or was simply shattered from an excellent shift, but he was clearly limping off the pitch. Manchester City's relief was short lived as Jozy's replacement, Zaki trotted onto the pitch.

Dawson's name is the next taken by the referee. Johnson advances up their right only to be brought down by Dawson. From the free kick, Johnson's ball is tipped out for a series of corners, which are initially hit out for another corner and then cleared by McShane and a combination of Hunt and Boateng respectively.

Zabaleta is the next name noted down by the referee, after he brings down Hunt to stop him advancing up the left wing. Cairney's free-kick is easily claimed by the keeper.

Cairney's next involvement saw a high ball coming down to either the young Hull City midfielder making his third first team league start, or Premier League winner, FA Cup winner, Serie A winner, World Cup and European Cup winner Patrick Viera. One of the two players using his great skill and experience to fairly win possession, the other bluntly bundles his opponent to the floor. So as the referee takes the name of the Senegal born midfielder, Cairney has to momentarily leave the field of play to receive treatment.

A ball up to the half way line finds Hesselink on the half way line, who allows Zaki to break free up the inside left channel. Unfortunately his resulting shot is hit quite softly, allowing Given to make an easy save.

A series of substitutions first sees Boateng replaced by Olofinjana, then Hesselink is replaced by Kilbane, whilst Manchester City similarly replace Bridge, who'd only taken a small amount of abuse from the home crowd in relation to John Terry's affair with his ex-girlfriend, with Petrov.

With 90 minutes soon coming to an end, Manchester City really start to threaten the Hull City goal in search of an equaliser. First a cross to the back post is fubled by Myhill, allowing it to go for a corner, which is cleared. Then Tevez, Barry and Petrov combine up the left wing, before Tevez breaks free seeing his shot saved well by Myhill.

In the first of four minutes of time added on, Hunt and Zaki combine, winning a corner off Zabaleta. The corner is taken short to attempt to waste a few seconds of time, before Zaki concedes a goal kick.

In the third minute of time added on, the home support is loudly whistling for full time, but a long Given ball is first cleared by Mouyokolo before a returning ball is first punched by Myhill then cleared by Mouyokolo. The final chance of the game sees a long ball up to Adebayor at the edge of the area, but his soft shot is easily saved by Myhill.

In a week that started off with a relatively disappointing point taken from the Wolves game, the Tigers can surely be buoyed by ending it having taken a total of 5 points from the home games against Wolves, Chelsea and Manchester City. The work rate of the Hull City starting 11, ably assisted by a strong supporting cast on the substitute's bench can only help raise the confidence in the coming matches and the Tigers battle at the bottom of the table
