Well built and six foot tall, Paynter was a young talent brought to the club initially on loan to kick-start City's goalscoring exploits in the Championship.  After half a season he was overtaken by the arrival of Jon Parkin and on the eve of 2006-07 he signed for Southend United in return for £200,000, a great piece of business for City.  Paynter's time at Southend was unsuccessful and he signed for Swindon a year later and found his form, contributing 50 goals in three seasons.  At the expiry of his contract, these goals encouraged Leeds United, newly promoted to the Championship, to secure his services.  But the goals had, alas, dried up.
