Giant goalkeeper plucked from non-league after he had an early Juniors career at Burnley and Bury under the tutelage of both Warren and Walter Joyce. After only 20 games his promise was noticed by Derby boss Jim Smith, and a big money fee could not be refused.  Made his Premiership bow in 2000-1 and for a time challenged comedy Estonian netminder Mart Poom for the Pride Park gloves.  However as Derby slid down the leagues, Oakes fell out of favour and his career was only revived two years later with a short term switch to Walsall.
