A pedigree goalscorer, McParland was prized away from his first club Notts County after a nine season spell in which goals came easily to the Scotsman.  Alas, his signing coincided with City's decline from Division Two contender to relegation rabbit fodder.  Consequently similar net-rippling feats were not achieved for the Tigers and his career soon faded around the lower reaches of Scottish and English Leagues.
McParland subsequently enjoyed a successful coaching career with several Midlands clubs before returning to his roots when in October 2007 he accepted the post of manager at Notts County.
