Experienced left sided operator and former captain of Wigan, Irish international Kilbane joined the Tigers on a two and a half year deal during the January 2009 transfer window.  A junior at Preston, Kilbane carved out a top level career at West Bromwich, Sunderland and most notably Everton before joining the Latics late in 2006.  Kilbane was signed to add immediate stability to the City defence as the Tigers' first foray into the Premier League faltered and he contributed to the Tigers survival as much as most, being used as emergency left back, centre midfielder and centre back.  His versatility continued to see him used regularly during the Tigers' second Premier League season.  On City's relegation and subsequent financial crisis, Kilbane agreed to half his wages in return for another year on his contract and continued to play a support role in defence and midfield.  In January 2011 Kilbane was loaned to Huddersfield Town to aid their League One promotion push, which ended in Wembley play-off defeat.
One of Kilbane's early appearances as a 19 year old at Preston was an Auto Windscreens Shield at Boothferry Park, a game notorious for its paltry attendance of 753.
