Released after six seasons at his home town club, this diminutive and hard working midfielder joined City on a short term contract and, after a shaky start, settled well into the Boothferry fold and earned a longer term deal.  Keates was perhaps City's strongest midfielder in 2002-03, combining dogged tackling with good passing and strong motivational skills and he had the distinction of scoring the first League goal at the KC Stadium.  He found first team chances harder to find in 2003-04 and eventually moved on, rejoining Jan Molby - the manager who signed him for City - at Kidderminster.  Within a season and a half Kiddie had slid into the Conference and Dean briefly joined Lincoln City in 2005 before returning to his Walsall roots in 2006.  Joined Peterborough United in 2007-08 and won successive promotions to League 1 and the Championship in his first two seasons, but he was a peripheral figure in the second tier, especially once Darren Ferguson left, and his contract was cancelled in January 2010 to allow him to join Wycombe Wanderers.
May 2010 - signed for Wrexham.
